Everyone had somewhere to be on a Sunday morning, except Ann. The sound of the plane taking off told her Paolo had departed. Rocco and Gil left Ann and the documentary makers in the bar in order to pin down the boss and the priest for an interview. Damien wanted to show Veronique his latest footage so they left for his cabin. Ann didn’t fancy hanging around the bar on her own but wandering around the camp was an even worse idea. This rootless, unsheltered feeling should have been familiar, yet she had always managed to find refuge, even in the most inhospitable circumstances. One way of doing that was by attaching herself to some kind of protector. She finished her coffee and left the bar, ducking through the gap between buildings until she found the doctor’s hut.

The padlock was no longer present, so she assumed he was home and rapped politely on the door. It took over a minute before he yanked back the curtain and scowled. He opened the door a fraction.

“Do you mind? I’m with a patient.”

“Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t think you’d be working on a Sunday.”

His scowl deepened. “I work whenever people need me, Ann. What do you want?”

“A place of safety, actually. I’ve got nowhere else to go.”

The puff seemed to go out of him and he nodded to a bench beside his hut. “Take a seat. I may be a little while.” He went inside without a backward glance.

The sun was already brutally hot so Ann accepted his offer and sat in the shade. This, she supposed, was his waiting room. A plank rested on some logs under a sheet of tarpaulin serving as a makeshift awning. Basic, but it did the job. The second she sat on the bench, a lizard raced out past her feet, hotly pursued by another. Whether they had romance or murder in mind, Ann could only guess. She cast her mind over the conversation at breakfast, trying to read between the lines. Were Damien and Veronique trying to tell them something or laying a trap? It couldn’t be as crude as sexual attraction, she was reasonably sure of that.

Flies landed on a pile of something indistinguishable near the opposite construction. Ann tried to recall which building was which and identified it as the shop. She’d not yet had the pleasure of sampling its range and wondered if it would be safe to do so while the doctor was occupied. Just as she was debating, the door opened and Dr Telmo Carreira came out, carrying a plastic bucket covered with a lid.

“You can go inside now. Please lock the door and stay here until I return. That will be in around one hour. The patient needs to rest but whenever she’s ready, she can leave.” He hurried away towards ‘Main Street’, his twitchy demeanour reminiscent of the White Rabbit with his fob-watch. Alice in Wonderland again. Perhaps she should spend some time paying attention to her subconscious. Or maybe the disorientation and unfamiliarity was reminiscent of a bizarre dream.
